The Around the Mountain Cycle Trail is a cycle trail funded as one of the projects of the New Zealand Cycle Trail (NZCT) system in Southland, New Zealand. The trail is to be 175 km long, out of which 40 km already existed before the NZCT's creation.[1]
The first stage of the cycle trail, to be built with $4 million dollar of NZCT funding, will go from Walter Peak to Mossburn, while a further $4 million for extensions are to be sought from other sources. Southland Mayor Frana Cardno noted that she expects the cycle trails to become as popular as the Great Walks, and rival Milford Track in numbers,[2] and that she was delighted at having signed the agreement with government, despite not receiving Government funding for the full length (with costs initially estimated at $9–11 million). The second stage is to continue to Lumsden and Kingston.[3]
